Read this in one sitting. It is very gripping. I know it’s not supposed to be a suspense or a thriller… but at some point it very much felt like Jordan Peele’s Get Out. Like the claustrophobia one can feel when everything unravels? Or like Mrs. Chamberlain’s borderline obsession with Emira?Eerie, tbh.

I enjoyed reading this. It felt like a mix of the novels Underbelly and The Help (but without the white hero, instead just white people being whack).

i actually purchased this book at the beginning of this year but did not get around to reading it until now as i’m trying to find my love for reading again. this is probably one of the first books i’ve read in a while that once i got stuck into i really enjoyed.

i found myself developing connections with and feeling as i was invested and involved in the characters lives. i throughly enjoyed the lessons and experiences of racism and privilege that were integrated throughout the entire story. once i started to read i didn’t want to put my book down.

however the end of this book in my opinion ended quite suddenly ? i felt like the last 15 pages of the story went by too fast and ended with no true meaning that backed the rest of the story and left me feeling unsatisfied. regardless if you are looking for an easy, enjoyable read, i would definitely recommend reading this book!

I almost gave this fewer stars because I spent so much time during this book just cringing and feeling embarrassed to be a white person, but that is not the point of the star rating. This would be great to read with a book group - I really want to talk about with someone who has read it! It is about the aftermath of a particular racial incident and the relationship between a white woman who is some sort of lifestyle blogger type person and the black woman who babysits for her. Without spoiling it, there was a character who I thought was basically ok, just really flawed, who turned out to be kinda horrible and another who I thought was horrible but turned out to be ok according to the book but who I still felt weird about? It was not exactly pleasant as there was a lot of people acting in terrible ways, but also it managed to be pretty compelling and I guess kind of fun. It was a very quick read.

Was looking for an easy snack book to read before moving on to my to read pile and this did the trick.

The story was fairly interesting and kept me engaged to find out what happened next, but felt characters were so one dimensional and just caricatures - maybe because I'm too late to reading it (was written in 2016), and at the time it would have been a sharp commentary? One of the reviews on the back was 'bites into the zeitgeist', and think that was probably the case at the time but now just came across a bit clumsy. I also just have a pet peeve of any form of monologue (internal or spoken) that rearticulates a point that has already been implicitly made - think America Ferreras speech in Barbie - and there were a fair few in here.

Overall, was the snack I was looking for but nothing to write home about as the writing felt a bit forced and unsubtle and the characters caricatures purely to drive the story and message forward.
