solid, well written, well paced. kept picturing this as a movie, like in scenes where it could shade towards sarcasm with the idealism of some of the characters, or not, not sure if that's a good thing- like it's not in the text, not sure if its intentional. read this b/c whitney know her and we might meet her, so for something i wouldn't have picked up randomly if was solid.

I just can’t get into it. I think I don’t like alternative historical fiction.

A rich novel that is similar to "My Revolutions" by tackling 1960s radicalism, but is much more sprawling and ambitious. Choi's writing is richly detailed which will probably turn off some readers who just want the story to keep chugging along. This story, though, demands acute shading since it grapples with the gray areas between good intentions and the questionable means in which to see them through. A good example of more really being more.

A fictionalized version of the Patty Hearst story. . .but engaging, if slow.

"The next day was tall and dark blue ..."

"His letters arguably lacked nothing, but she couldn't stop searching them for an intangible something, the orthographic equivalent of his hands on her skin."

There is a lot of good stuff in here, I love Susan Choi's writing, but I just felt like she didn't have enough empathy or understanding of why the characters did the things they'd done and so couldn't sell the emotional journey of the book.

I really enjoyed the first two thirds of this book, but found myself frustrated by the philosophizing of the final third, and wishing the story would simply wrap up.
