Short and sweet story about unappealing aliens that arrive, offering gifts to humans. The story is 70 years old or so now...

GENIAL. SERVIU COMO INSPIRAÇÃO PARA O MELHOR EPISÓDIO DE TWILIGHT ZONE DE SEMPRE.

Obviously inspired to read this because of the famous Twilight Zone episode. Just a fun, little, quick, 7-page Sci Fi read full of imagination. It really brings you to a bygone era of Retro Futurism.

The story ends right as it gets to the punchline, which I'm noticing is a pattern in a lot of these old sci-fi stories. I feel like this one is engraved enough into culture everyone'll know the plot twist of it, but the idea is still good enough to give it a whirl.

So, if this story was published today for the first time I would have rated this a one star. The characters were under developed and the aliens were nothing special. But, this was published in 1950 and I can appreciate why this story made such an impression during that time. Had I been alive in 1950 and read this story it would have Blown My Mind.

This is a famous story—or at least, a famous Twilight Zone episode, so most people know the story. I haven’t seen the TV episode in years, but I still knew the last line of this story. That said, it’s a longer story that you expect. The beginning is all about how the main character doesn’t like the aliens very much for their appearance, but comes around to believing that have altruism as a goal, unlike his friend who suspects their motives throughout the story. The two are language experts, U.N. translators, and eventually they steal one of the alien’s books and translate the title, which is where the story title comes from. It’s a clever story, even with the twist ending, which doesn’t necessarily resolve things, even if it helps explain the aliens.

A+ for the title itself
