I love a book with a slightly unhinged protagonist and I found this in both Wren and Oak. Both characters are wresting with trauma and dealing with it in different (and sometimes similar) ways. I love the contrast of these two and the way they highlight how different people respond and react to violence and abuse. The plot, while engaging, does tend to take a backseat. This is a quality that can be off putting but I find it makes sense in the context.
Given that Wren is the missing Heart of Mellith, it makes sense that the plot focuses more on her and Oak.
This feels like a book with high stakes. I found myself thinking about it after I finished and immediately looking to read the next one.

Much faster paced than Folk of the Air, and yet parts of the story dragged for me. I’m not sure if it’s because of how good Jude and Cardan were, but Wren was just not as…interesting to me. Still magical, still well written, just not as engaging.

Where to begin, where to begin? I love stepping into the lands of Elfhame; Holly Black’s world is lush and intriguing and just addicting, it’s like a drug. I love Wren and Oak in all their deceptions and connections. I cannot wait to dive back in with The Prisoner’s Throne to conclude this story!

This one had a bit of a slow start, and I nearly DNF’d it, but the end was worth it. It had a twisty surprise at the end that was somehow galling, crazy, and yet exactly what I expected 😂

After reading and loving The Folk of the Air series it was only a matter of time until I needed to start The Stolen Heir. Welcome back to Elfhame and the story of Oak and Wren.

I read this book back in March and just realised I never posted a review. I love Elfhame, the characters & Black's writting. But now roughly two months later I realise that this story didn't stick with me as The Cruel Prince did. I almost have no memory of the plot (I definitely have to read a summary before jumping into book two) but I remember that while reading I was not as invested in the book as I would have anticipated. The pacing was much slower than what I was used to. I know it's always bad to compare BUT The Folk of the Air series has a very special place in my heart and I just thought I would love this one more. Don't get me wrong it was a good book but it was missing some action and memorable moments between the characters. I'm still excited to pick up book two because this world is just too good and I want to see more of Wren.
