2.5

I really wanted to love this book but unfortunately I just couldn't. I can't even really say that I liked it. I really didn't like the writing style which didn't flow and was really awkward. Some odd decisions were made when it came to the writing. Details would be interjected into the story in odd ways like randomly mentioning something about a character at times were it seemed irrelevant. There was a lot of telling rather than showing that took away from the story. This is my main issue with this book and it really made it unenjoyable and why I am giving it a 2.5.

I did find Jasmine to be a very relatable character though at times her constant, repetitive negative self talk got tiring to read. Also for all the times she said she loves and accepts herself it was clear that she didn't. Both of the main characters acted very immature for their age, which detracted from the story. I think it could have done with less name calling since I found it to be over the top.

Most of the figure skating terminology was well explained.

There were also some great messages in the book but there were also some problematic things in my opinion. There was negative talk around weight and watching what you eat, a lot of suppressing emotions to not look "weak," and using words like p*ssy and b*tch in a derogatory way. I get that these are all reflective of the culture we live in but I really don't care for them.

Overall this book had a lot of potential but for me it fell short.
