This was quite fun! I had read the first installement a long time ago, and I was feeling the need for a romance, so I picked up the sequel (though I apparently skipped book 0.5??)

The issues that had affected my enjoyment of the first book of the series were not apparent in this sequel. However, I wasn't as in love with the characters as I could have been, not due to the writing, but to the fact that he would consider going through with his plan at all in the beginning, and then at the end would say the things he says... not quite the hero we deserve.

I did however love the relationship between the sisters, as well as the glimpses into Oliver's family life. I LOVED Freddy and Free and their story. It was beautiful and heartbreaking and so, so lovely.

The only downside? Now I'm craving MORE romance. Curses!

I really enjoyed this book immensely. It's filled with the sorts of women I love. Determined women who are not willing to back down and cave to the men in their time that feel they should only be under their thumb. Best type of historical in my opinion.

This one was particularly lovely with multiple woman who deserve to be called strong. And I loved Jane and Oliver together. They both want so much to be out of the box that society would put them in and together they find the person that they each deserve to be. Standing strong on their own.

Fantastic continuation of this series. :D

This book had me straight up cackling. I loved the way the FMC chose to avoid marriage: by acting like she wasn't intelligent enough to follow social norms and throwing insults left and right with an air of false innocence. The main FMC and MMC were a fantastic fit for one another. The MMC had soooo much crap to get over and it was annoying, but realistic, how much it deterred him from pursuing a long term relationship with FMC.
This book was unique because it had a small portion dedicated to a secondary FMC (main FMC sister) and MMC. I loved that the author delved into the depth of race issues that existed in this time frame, but felt she went a little too light on the barriers the couple would have faced.

Spice: 2/5

Trigger Warnings: medical abuse, isolation, racial discrimination, emotional abuse

I love Courtney Milan’s books- they’re amazing and a breath of fresh air and when I’m in a bit of a reading rut I can always turn to her books to bring me happiness and make me want to read, to not put a book down.

The characters in this are fantastic and the writing beautiful, there were endless pages of beautiful prose. It tackles unconventional topics like reform and racism and has characters of colour which is so lovely in a historical romance

didn't grab me like the others in the series. I may revisit it some time, since I read it while jet-lagged last week which may have been responsible for the indifference, lol.

Some additional things I've learned from reading another romance novel:

1 - Courtney Milan actually writes pretty great female heroines. I expected blushing virgins who were happy to obey the orders of the men in their lives, but that is not at all what I've found. These women are pretty empowered for their time, and that's cool. I'm not sure if that's true of most romance novels, but that's been true of the Brothers Sinister series.

2 - There is a lot more story and a lot less sex in these books than I expected. Things do get a little sexy from time to time, but these are much more character-driven tales of love than steamy pages of lust. I guess I anticipated that the smut would be the point of the thing, with a few lines of story tossed in around it. I've been pleasantly surprised to find out I was wrong.

3 - "Organ" has far eclipsed "member" as the cringiest term for penis, though both still make me shudder.

I could pretend that I'm walking away now, but if the past few days are any indication, I'm probably going to finish this series. I'm having more fun than expected.

Ahhhhhh, so good. I will admit that though the main romance was lovely, what I really loved about the book was all the tropes and conventions it turned on their ear. And the secondary romance! SO GREAT. But let's be real here, a Courtney Milan novel has to work pretty hard to get less than five stars from me.

And ROBERT AND OLIVER OMG BROTHERSSSSSSSS
