A positively charming, smart, altogether swoonworthy read. I smiled continuously every morning I read this on the F train. Milan, as she often does, focuses on the drawing room b-list, in this case Jane, an untitled and unschooled heiress and Oliver, a semi-acknowledged by-blow with an inheritance and political ambitions as well as a loving very non-noble family life up until Eton. Both of these characters have people in their lives whom them care about deeply, some of whom I suspect got their own book (Free and Sebastian come to mind) and some of whom have their own stories covered here, and they are interesting characters indeed. We also get to check in with Hugo and Serena from the earlier novella The Governess Affair, which is really fun. The main characters and their conversations here are amusing and smart, the story setup is really true to life, racism and classicism are acknowledged, we have an actual asexual character, which is rare in romance, and the British legal history is fun (I am a law nerd, like Milan herself a former lawyer who is intrigued by all the aspects of law that won't bring in a paycheck. ) A most enjoyable read that helped me feel the love on a rather shit workweek.

"It was a shockingly fierce, possessive thought. It came anyway. Mine."

Jane lives a life in numbers. 100,000 is the pounds in her dowry that can bring men far and wide to bid for her hand in marriage and 480 is the number of days before her younger sister Emily is of age. Jane must do anything and everything to make sure she remains unwed for the next 480 days to ensure Emily's safety. As a result, Jane unleashes on Cambridge society with ill manners, outrageously awful dresses and leaves no doubt that she is a woman that does not know her place. Only problem comes in an Oliver sized package. The one who truly sees her.

This was the last romance in a long list of romances. I am the worn with reading romances so I was thrilled to find I enjoyed this story immensely. Many historical romance authors touch on the lack of rights for women in the 1800s but I felt like this was the first one that was really defiant with her characters from a lot of different realistic circumstances. Fast, quirky and wicked smart with a lot of heart.

I adore the hero and heroine for this book, but even more so was their sisters, I love Emily and Free. The sibling relationships are so great in this book. I've come to the conclusion that Milan's books while revolves around romance it's not the romance that I stay for, it's the individual character arcs and the way she delves into historical details that I haven't seen in other regency romances.
