I loved The Bird and the Sword so hard, and I’m amazed that The Queen and the Cure filled me with equal joy. Once again, Amy Harmon spins a tantalizing tale of love, bravery, sacrifice, and magic. She just may turn me into a lover of romantic fantasy after all.
Kjell is the half brother of the King of Jeru, but he has no desire to rule. He is content to be a mighty warrior and captain of the King’s guard. Although the people of Jeru are free to explore their magical abilities, Kjell is hesitant to conjure his newly discovered gift as a Healer.
I was completely enamored with Sasha, the slave girl Kjell encounters who has no long-term memory but an unusual gift. Theirs is an epic love story. In addition to the slow burn of Kjell’s relationship with the mysterious woman, his evolving acceptance of himself is moving.
The story is simply riveting and overflowing with adventure, heartbreak, danger, and devotion. Amy Harmon has created an utterly believable imaginary world that entranced me from beginning to end.
If you decide to listen to the audiobook, I have no doubt that you will be impressed by Steve West’s narration. His deep voice and smooth delivery are perfection, with patient timing, heartfelt emotions, and the believable embodiment of every single character. His British accent isn’t hard on the ears either.

Real score 4.25. I can't even define what misses for the fifth star. But I did really enjoy this.
Ugh. I forgot I was reading this book - I was so uninterested. After the triumph of The Bird and the Sword and the winning characters, trials, and romance, I was really expecting more from this one. Totally uninterested in Sasha. She was actually super annoying to me. And Kjell was so one-dimensional. A big disappointment.
Of note, I listened to this on audible. So, there was something about book 1 audio of The Bird and the sword that blew me away that I was looking for in the queen and the cure, maybe something along the similar lines? While I loved the fantasy plot, I'm not sure if I connected with Kjell and Sasha as a couple? Honestly, I can't find the main reason to back up my 3 star rating. I think the audio version had some part to do with it. This one was just okay, but it won't prevent me from reading more Amy!
Bird & Sword war wohl eines meiner Jahreshighlights 2017. Mit diesem Buch hat sich Amy Harmon zu einer meiner Top Autorinnen katapultiert. Deshalb ist es kein Wunder, dass ich auch den zweiten Band Queen & Blood unbedingt lesen wollte.
In diesem zweiten Band ist Kjell von Jeru, der Halbbruder König Tiras, der Hauptprotagonist. Ich war schon in Bird & Sword sehr gespannt was sich hinter seiner mürrischen Fassade verbirgt. Und in diesem Buch hat er mein Herz für sich erobert. Warum, Weshalb, Wie erzähle ich euch jetzt.
Am Ende des ersten Bandes hat Kjell festgestellt, dass auch er eine Gabe besitzt. Er ist ein Heiler, aber er weiß nicht wie er mit dieser Erkenntnis umgehen soll. Kjell war doch immer ein Krieger, jemand der Stärke und Macht ausstrahlt, und niemand sanftes der Menschen heilt. Für ihn ist die neue Lage verwirrend und wirklich eingestehen will er es sich auch nicht. Bis er auf die Sklavin Sasha trifft, die seine Hilfe benötigt. Er heilt sie und erschafft hierbei ein Band, das sie verbindet.
Er lockt sie mit den Worten “Komm zu mir, und ich werde versuchen die zu lieben. Ich werde versuchen dich zu lieben, wenn du nur zu mir kommst” zu sich. Kann er, der von sich behauptet niemanden außer seinen Bruder zu lieben, einer Frau sein Herz schenken? Kann er sanft und gefühlvoll sein? Kann er über seinen Schatten springen und seine Seele öffnen und den Heiler in ihm akzeptieren?

Ich wäre am liebsten nie aus dem unglaublichen Universum aufgewacht, das Amy Harmon mit diesen beiden Büchern erschaffen hat.
Ich garantiere euch Queen & Blood ist ein Buch das magisch, poetisch und zauberhaft ist. Man merkt jedem Wort an, dass Amy Harmon versucht hat dem Buch Leben einzuhauchen. Und meiner Meinung nach hat sie dies auch geschafft. Ich liebe sowohl Bird & Sword als auch Queen & Blood und weiß mit Sicherheit, dass ich die restlichen Bücher der Autorin ganz bald lesen muss. Weil ihre Art zu Schreiben kaum zu vergleichen ist.

The Queen and the Cure is a follow-up to The Bird and the Sword (reviewed here), this story featuring Kjell of Jeru, the illegitimate brother of King Tiras who was the love interest in The Bird and the Stone. Kjell is the captain of the guard for his brother's kingdom and also in possession of the gift of healing, of which he is a reluctant user. This book follows Kjell as he falls in love with Sasha, a dying, amnesiac slave who he heals from near-death and who has the gift of foresight.
Like The Bird and the Sword, the writing of this book was beautiful and insightful, with lines that have multiple symbolic meanings. But I really can't say that I liked Kjell much as a person. He was grumpy, brooding, selfish, emotionally withdrawn, and really only seemed to love Sasha because of how helpless and dependent upon him she was. This isn't to say I found him an unrealistic character. But I didn't enjoy reading about him, perhaps because the story was in his POV, thus forcing me to live inside his head.
His merely admitting that he loved Sasha where he'd previously opted to pretend he didn't wasn't a sufficient act of redemption or character growth in my opinion. I never found myself rooting for him to get what he wanted.
Even when the recovery of Sasha's memory revealed something unexpected, I actually hoped they wouldn't get together. But the romance genre doesn't work that way. Instead, we're given an improbable set of circumstances that allowed Kjell and Sasha to be together under the best possible circumstances with no real sacrifice on the part of either of them.
The strength of this book lies in its use of setting, the internal politics of the world, and again the lushness of the prose. Amy Harmon knows how to convey a story well and I would read another book set in this story world. I would, however, like to read about a different sort of heroine than the sweet, waif-y, wounded, virginal type that featured in this book and the previous one. Honestly, I would have preferred a m/m romance between Kjell and Jerrick, my favourite character in the book.

Such an amazing book. Amy is a very gifted writer, making you feel as though you're right there.
