This is an absolutely gorgeous graphic novel that needs no words, which is a good thing because you don't get any. There are some symbols, but they don't spell any "real" words. They are as confusing to the reader as they are to the man trying (and initially failing) to read them.
The artwork is beautiful and relays the experience of immigrants to places where everything is alien to them. And indeed the "alien" aspect is used efficiently. The world looks like something out of science fiction novel, with crazy new devices and systems and creatures. The reader's confusion at what is meant to be what mimics the confusion of our main character, a man who has traveled to a foreign city to ultimately provide a better for himself and, eventually, for his wife and child. Everything is different in this new place. He struggles, he finds good people who are willing to help, he builds a new life.
This is tender, sweet, and sometimes a little sad. The sepia colors and detailed drawings are used perfectly to convey every emotion.
While this didn't gut punch me like [a:Christophe Chabouté|2378625|Christophe Chabouté|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1349460721p2/2378625.jpg]'s wordless/minimal worded books tend to, it was still a beautiful book to spend time looking through and figuring out.
