This book had all the elements of an SK book that I love, but for some reason I just couldn't get invested.

Duma Key has a fascinating premise that hooks the reader in and yet a long-winded journey (classic King, really) that doesn't ultimately feel like it's paid off. The first half was solid and I was really invested in the characters but the outcome and pacing just really fell flat after that. It's not a particularly horror-filled book which I don't necessarily mind as a change of scenery from King's other works but the last 100 pages or so attempt to cram some horror in all the same. I found this jarring and not particularly in line with the rest of the story so just wished for a better conclusion in that respect! Decent read but such a chunk of a book it doesn't feel worth the wrap-up.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: if you claim King’s best books are from the ‘70s and ‘80s, I think you’re wrong. King is a master of character, and his work in *Duma Key* is no exception. There are a few of the old King-isms to contend with, but here is a fine story of recovery after a traumatic injury, and of the powers of artistic creativity. Oh, and some delightfully creepy moments as well; it wouldn’t feel like a King book otherwise.
Hmmm, the first half was very good, but then it got a bit ridiculous.

Stephen King is incredible at the slow burn build up in his books and Duma Key was no exception. This book was dark, fun, unique, and kept me wanting to read more. I couldn’t put this book down. I enjoyed this book taking place in a nontraditional location for King and thought he did an excellent job world building this story.
