As interested as I am in cults and in the worshipping of certain leaders, this book unfortunately did not engage me at all. I felt myself completely disengaging throughout; I think the content was interesting but the delivery fell flat. Since it is on my Audible forever, I might come back to it, but for now I have to mark it as DNF. Sorry 😫

I found the army portions to be more engaging. I am curious of what she has to say about good versus bad leadership. It’s well written.

This was a very difficult read as the content can be very heavy at times but overall this was an amazing and enlightening story of self discovery, perseverance and the dangers of group behaviour in any form.

This book is so intensely personal and is literally what happened to her, so it's difficult to rate, but I think the quality of the story telling is really inconsistent throughout the book. Despite the efforts to create a through line, it felt like two different books, and ultimately glossed over a lot of what I would have been more interested in about her pist-cult life in favor of relitigating disagreements, telling army stories, and praising the military industrial complex even as she calls it a cult.

This story is important, heartbreaking, and worthwhile. Also, the writing is repetitive, with sentences from the previous paragraph repeated in a different word order... throughout the entire book. Somehow, it's still hard to follow despite the constant reminders to the reader. Overall, it's a valuable and unique perspective distracted by the writing itself.
