I wasn't really engaged with this one. I think I should have immediately gone into this as I did with the first 3 books as I struggled to take a grasp of the story.

There were still moments of excitement and intrigue and I definitely wanted to see how the 4th book concluded, but I was lost and half paying attention the majority of the time.

I wanted to read this because my goal last year was to discover new authors. Holly Black’s cruel prince series is adored on Tiktok but I wanted to read some of her older work first. When I saw she had a series with Cassandra Clare, I was all for it. I have loved the series so far expect for the last book, but this book has brought the standard back a bit.

This book is still following Call. He is in prison, because a generation ago, Constantine Madden came close to achieving what no else has achieved: the ability to bring back the dead. He didn’t succeed but he did find a way to keep himself alive, inside Call. So now Call is in Prison because he is one of the most feared students in the history of the Magisterium, he is thought to be responsible for the death of his best friend and for the war that has started. Everyone wants to know what Constantine has planned and how he managed to live on. But Call has no idea. It is only when he’s broken out of prison that the full potential of Constantine’s plan is suddenly in his hands and now, he must decide what to do with it.

This book was better than the last one but only because something actually happened. Call’s power grew and he managed to do something that no one has done before, but that was about it. For a book so small, it is very packed with action which I liked. If it was any longer, I think it would have dragged. I liked that Jasper having some more of character development, but I just wanted him to have more of a development especially with Aaron now gone.

This book is getting a tad repetitive, I just feel like there has been no progression during this series expect for Aaron’s dying. It’s the same thing – Call thinks he is bad, he does something bad or controversial, everyone around him starts to doubt him as well, he does something amazing and out of this world, everyone forgives him but is scared or caution of him. I just want to know whether he is Constantine reborn and if they can stop Alex. This book was such a filler. I also felt that the “chemistry” between Call and Tamara was forced, when they kissed, I thought they would do the thing of that felt weird let's just stay friends and instead it’s all we are in love.
