It's an interesting collection of short stories. Some of them are a bit more forgettable including the first one but stories like the second in the collection really stand out. There is an overall wonderful cohesion between all the stories.

It is hard to rate a short story collection and this is my first Oyeyemi book. I give it a 3-3.5 stars as it took me awhile to get into her writing style and some of the stories left me wondering what did I just read, did I miss something? I will try and read another one of her books at a later date.

Admittedly, this was my first book by Helen Oyeyemi, but WOW. She is a masterful storyteller. I need to process this before I review, but yeah. Wow.

Wonderful writing, but I fear I'm not smart enough to fully understand the quirks of the book. Looking forward to reading more from the author, though. Reminds me a lot of Jeanette Winterson's writing at times.

I know that I can always trust Helen Oyeyemi to deliver. The prose was magical, and it fits perfectly with the stories Oyeyemi is telling, stories about keys and stories about houses and, as always, stories full of a strange and unique and beautiful magic.

Girl, Helen, I need a character map up in here.

Was confused; loved it.

I feel like I've missed out on something from this book...

Reviewing short story collections is difficult!

The rating reflects that some stories I absolutely LOVED, and other were great, but not for me.

I thought the stories were beautifully crafted and wonderfully diverse, with 'books and roses' probably being my favourite.

I will, without a doubt, be checking out more of Helen Oyeyemi's work!

I just love Oyeyemi’s writing so much. This is the second book I read by her, the first being a novel while this is a short story collection. And let me tell you, she absolutely SHINES in both mediums. Her writing is just so beautiful and captivating, she truly brings the words to life. I absolutely loved everything about this collection of short stories, from start to finish but my absolute favourite part was that they all revolved around one central them: keys. Each story was so unique and interesting in its own way and I refuse to pick a favourite because they are all STUNNING. If you haven’t read any of Oyeyemi’s work yet then please do yourself a favour and fix that because her work is just beyond amazing!
