My first Oyeyemi. So weird, but in the best possible way. 4 stars because I just wanted more more more.
It was really good, but for some reason I just couldn't finish it
I am still reeling from the discombobulating effect of reading What is Not Yours is Not Yours, such that I can think of nothing to say but read it for a ride.
This is the first time I've read Oyeyemi, and reviews of this story collection were so positive, but it left me cold. It made me want to reread authors who cover similar ground in a more fulfilling way, like Kelly Link and Aimee Bender. Some of these stories seemed geared more toward young adult readers and reminded me of unsuccessful attempts at a Francesca Lia Block tale.

Captivating tales transcending borders and realities, connected by the power and intrigue of a key. At times mysterious and perplexing, other times magical. Favorites were: "'sorry' doesn't sweeten her tea," "a brief history of the homely wench society," and "if a book is locked there's probably a good reason for that don't you think."

So WEIRD and incredibly written. Like Woody Allen writing you can actually connect to. Beautiful and haunting and strange, deals with same sex relationships so casually, you forget
