Another haunting read by Helen Oyeyemi. Her writing weaves an intricate spell and always leaves me feeling bereft once I've shut the book. The stories were remarkable, a beautiful tapestry of real and yet not quite real tales. Simply amazing.

4.5... I had 3 favorite stories: is your blood as red as this?; "sorry doesn't sweeten her tea; presence; & a brief history of the homely wench society

I can see myself rereading this again.

all were interesting, some were confusing. oyeyemi's has amazing creativity and a wonderful storytelling ability. these stories are nothing short of great, although some were definitely better than other.

i really enjoyed books & roses, sorry does't sweeten tea, homely wench & if a book is locked. the concept of this collection is so intriguing. while i objectively admire the brilliance of the collection & oyeyemi's writing, i struggle to relate to some of the stories and the endings were not my cup of tea.

3.5 for a collection that is really thought provoking & surreal

It's so rare in a short story collection to enjoy all of the stories inside. Some are bound to be less well crafted or more mundane than others. Usually if I like half, I consider it a great collection. This time, I found something to love or be fascinated by in every single one. Oyeyemi's writing gets better with every book of hers I read. I wish I'd read this slower, taking time to savour the twists and unique ways she linked each tale together. But at the same time, I couldn't stop reading, needing to dig deeper, go further. Amazing.

It's been a really long time since a book hit me this hard.

What an exciting experience it is to read books like this. And it, too, was a birthday gift!
Whatever kind of a reader you may be, you're sure to fall in love with the incredulity, complex simplicity of the stories. Keys that connect stories and secret gardens are supposed to be the highlight but I found the characters more compelling. Saying anything more would count as spoilers. If you're reading this, go get yourself a copy of this marvellous book.

Some of the short stories in this book were good but most were just a force to get through.
This is the closer I've come to not finishing a book in a very very long time.

Really enjoyed this collection! Solid theme. Fun characters and interesting plots. I look forward to reading more of her work!

My only complaint is that the endings never felt fully formed, so I often had trouble moving to the next story bc the last one never had a conclusive ending. Not in the ambiguous sense, but where the story just ended before it even reached the climax.

That was a certainly-at-times-strange yet mostly fascinating and magical collection of stories. Now I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to read Oyeyemi's work! I found myself wanting more from almost every story, so I'm definitely looking forward to reading a novel of hers.
