Solid YA high-speed roller-coaster of a novel. Crammed to the gunnels with '80s popular cultural references, you get the distinct impression that we are witnessing the author indulging his own personal love for the decade. I haven't seen the movie, but imagine it would transfer to the screen with ease. The deja vu I got from reading the first dozen pages of Artemis (his next novel) at the end were enough to convince me I don't need to read any more, but I enjoyed burning through this one.

I loved this book start to finish. Loved. Will be reading again

I struggled to give this book a rating. The pop culture references spoke to my nerdy side throughout the book and it was an easy read from start to finish. However, upon reflection it felt more like a shallow story to give a setting to cram in as many videogame, film and music references as possible. None the less, I can't possibly mark a book low that was such a joy.

Some parts felt long and wordy (some of the explanations) - very cool concept - was really worried the plot had twisted in a bad way but glad that wasn’t the end. Did rely on the main character’s serious luck /knowing how to do things he’d never done before… but glad to see the good guy win in the end
