Fun idea but this book is ultimately 99% 80s trivia and 0% grappling with any of the potentially interesting implications or possibilities of its characters living in a VR game. The few times that it veers into interesting themes are extremely shallow. Button that can destroy the whole simulation? Not even a moment’s consideration of whether or even when it could be worth using. Avatars can have appearance and gender decoupled from those of their real person? One person of color chooses to appear as a white guy, that’s it. Keeping focused on the fantasy and sci-fi references is more important to the author.

This is such a fantastic read. For anyone that loves video games, sci-fi, fantasy, or just awesome nerdy references this is the book for you. I dont understand any negative reviews it has. Are these people confused because they don't understand the references? Who knows, but my home state is at the end of the book with a full blown Tolkien reference so that alone gave it at least 3 stars. It is such a fun and intense read from beginning to end!!! Read it!!!
