I read this because I liked the Translator and I wasn't disappointed. This book is beautifully written. Most novels dealing with emigration and identity focus on alienation. Here, Aboulela also looks at the bonds people form in their adopted environment, which links they choose to keep to their country of origin and what it means to belong somewhere.

I enjoyed the way the narrative moved from past to present, alternating between the protagonist and her research, and the subject of her research itself. There were some apt lines about what it means to be an immigrant and how the experience of being an immigrant, belonging to two or more cultures, moves one through life in the eyes of others and in yourself.
