This is my first introduction to Jane Gardam, and I will be looking for her other books. Her audience includes adults, young adults and children. She is an award-winning author that has completely escaped my notice, perhaps because I have read some reviews that compare her to Jane Austen. I know, I know, everyone loves Jane. Except me. I just could never get the point of her books and her social commentary. Maybe I should pick-up Pride and Prejudice again and see if time has helped to change my mind.
Back to The Stories. The anthology’s theme is relationships between people, and their connection to each other. Gardam uses her language mastery to convey a tale told with insight, charm and wry humor. All the characters have depth to them, which is sometimes hard to find in a short story. Some of the stories will leave you with a smile, others will leave you sad and a few will leave you downright unsettled.
I highly recommend this gem of a book.
