i was super interested in the premise of this book - written by an alien about humans - yet i couldn’t love this book like i wanted to. i enjoyed the story itself but because the main character was an alien, he had a kind of know-it-all way of explaining/talking about things that i really didn’t appreciate. i didn’t know if i truly enjoyed the book or not until i was nearly 2/3 through it. the latter half of the book redeemed it *a little bit* for me
when he started talking more like a human & denounced his alien citizenship.
i loved the insight on human emotion, its irrationality, and how the imperfections in life are what make it worth living
i’m giving this 3.5/5 stars - was gonna be 3.25 but the third part of the book bumped it a little

This might be my favorite book of the year so far. This was such a clever and fun look into the human experience. Pain, love, everything that makes us human, all through the lens of an alien. I am so incredibly charmed by this book. It's bizarre and strange and I loved everything about it.

This was definitely an interesting read... I went in expecting sci-fi the way I'm used to it and left with what I considered more "philosophical sci-fi". It wasn't "bad", necessarily, but it was definitely different from what I'd normally read for fun and was a bit of a push to finish. I just never got into a good flow state with this book. I can see why others would enjoy it though! I'm still excited to read some of Haig's other books and I loved his writing style in particular.

I really liked The Midnight Library, so I wanted to read more from the author. At first, I really liked it, then it got a little odd, then it was kinda bland, then it wrapped up with a little heartwarming. I've never been a fan of alien (scary, silly, or replacing humans) stuff anyway! It's a nice book overall, not my favorite, not bad, I wouldn't own a physical copy and I wouldn't want to see this made into a film/series. I'll definitely read Matt Haig's other books.
