The second novel in this young adult steampunk series is megafun.

Westerfeld's Leviathan trilogy is very enjoyable. This book is better written than the first, but otherwise pretty equal to its prequel. This series isn't mind-blowing or ground-breaking in any way, but it offers a fun adventure, especially for young adult readers, a several very likable characters. I think the cover is the most steampunk part of the book, even though it has steampunk elements. But it's a quick, fun read for any adult who is looking for a book to coast through quickly.

I enjoyed this a lot more the Leviathan which somehow felt like too much of an introduction. This time around, the characters are more engaging, the plot feels like it's driven by genuinely high stakes and it finishes with a satisfactorily well orchestrated and complicated bang. Looking forward to the concluding novel, Goliath. (And the illustrations are great too!)

I actually like it better than the first one cause I think this one had a little more plot and more of a relationship between the two main characters. Even if the relationship is complicated with Deryn being secretly in love with Alek yet Alek only liking him as a friend and Alek thinks Deryn is a boy on top of that. This was a fun read and I am so excited to red the last one.

Loved this series overall, and this this was was a great second book to support the series. Continued to adore Westerfeld's ability to describe things that never were.

This book takes place pretty much right after Leviathan, which is great. I'm not a big fan of large time jumps between novels. There's just as much adventure and excitement as the first, though now we move into a world where there are more Clankers than Darwinists...more machines than fabricated animals! It's quite a change, and like Leviathan showed Alek being out of his comfort zone on the airship, Behemoth showed Deryn out of her comfort zone being in a world of machines.

It did not feel like a second book slump, and really pulled in some super intriguing plot movements and settings. The only thing that really bugged me was Alek's dumb little misogynistic thoughts toward women in this book. Usually those things don't irk me so badly, especially when writing during a time period such as this, but for some reason it really made me suddenly not like the kid nearly as much as I used to. Hopefully he'll finally learn some things in the third and final book to bring Goliath's rating up to a 5!

A solid sequel to Leviathan.
