I didn’t realize this was a romantic suspense going into it and that might be my fault. It’s not my favorite subgenre of romance and this one felt like it dragged even though it’s under 250 pages. I loved the sense of community built around Ciara and her romance with Lincoln. I just really struggled with the pacing of the suspense part of the story. Instead of being slowly wound up as the story went on, I found myself skimming and getting bored at times. I really like the side characters though so I will be moving on to book two and possibly book three as they seem to not have the suspense element.

I admire Lincoln and his vulnerability, but I don’t understand that Ciara allows these healthy relationships to form without being upfront with people. Whether she's scared or not, it’s not okay to wait until Eddie shows up and things get physical before telling Lincoln the truth. That’s just messed up. She should’ve been honest with her family, especially her mom, and gotten a license to carry after Eddie had her all twisted up with his stalker behavior. Something about her running away didn’t sit right with me either. I do enjoy Lincoln’s family though—they have this great dynamic with lots of warmth and laughter. As for Lincoln, his guilt over his fiancé's death and not facing her family for three years felt off to me, too. The whole situation just didn’t feel believable, especially with everyone telling half-truths.

Overall, the book did nothing for me as a reader but knowing myself, I will finish the series.
