I enjoyed it but dang was it long for not a lot to have happened. It was clearly a ton of set up for future books, and i am definitely intrigued enough to see where it goes, but there's is way too much of people just explaining a bunch of stuff that is tangentially relevant at best. I actually found the audiobook more enjoyable because i could just have the mythology wash over me and then check back in when things started happening again. I'm glad i read it, though i feel like it's tough to recommend it without knowing how the rest of the story ends up
AHHHHHH I FINISHED IT.
ONLY TOOK ME 3 MONTHS.
thoughts: this is a great, meandering high fantasy audiobook that's perfect for tuning in and out of as I do chores or puzzles because you can advance 5 chapters and it still hasn't changed.
It's VERY inspired by LOTR, the first half is almost painfully plot point by plot point similar to Fellowship. That's not a BAD thing, there's comfort in familiarity but it did lead to a weird deja vu feeling at times. And it does eventually break from that outline. From what I understand, this was very intentional on the author's part.
Rosamund Pike is perfection and I appreciate the level of acting she puts into her narrator and dialogue delivery. Her character voices kept me keyed into what was going on and who was saying what if I got distracted from the story and tuned back in.
Every December for when I spend the holidays alone, I crack open some puzzles and a very long audiobook to keep me occupied for over a week. I think book 2 will be my Christmas audiobook. I'm uncertain how long I'll be able to keep reading/listening to this series without abandoning it but I'll keep at it for now.
Something that surprised me was how strong and well written the female characters are, as this is 1) written by a dude and 2) on the older end of newer high fantasy. They feel real and human and I adore all of them.
I actually don't think I would have been able to get into this series without the television adaptation. Having an idea ahead of time of what is happening and who people are helped immensely.

I remember this series being a little bit of a trudge the first time through. I don’t think I ever made it to the end but I’m really enjoying it this time in audiobook form.
