I’m not going to write out an in-depth, well-considered review because, honestly, a 3-star book doesn’t stir up my passion enough — one way or the other — to do so. Instead, because it is such a beloved series, I just want to sort of jot down a few quick notes on why I didn’t love this first installment.

While there’s promise (and, with 13 more books, a lot of room for improvement and originality), I felt like there’s way too much cribbed from Lord of the Rings. I know, I’ve been told this first book especially is sort of a love-letter to LotR, but that doesn’t change the fact that so much of it felt like Great Value’s knock off version. Second, most of the characters frustrated and/or annoyed me, and they seemed very one-note in their portrayals. Third, there seemed to be a lot of...Deus ex machina isn’t quite the right term, but close enough...moments, with Moiraine pulling out some sudden MacGuyver magic to solve their problem, or the crew finding some sort of safety just as they’re about to be caught. And finally, more than anything, it just kinda dragged; I feel like I read Eye of the World as fast as I did not because I was that engaged, but because I wanted to move onto something more engaging.

I didn’t hate it — Jordan can paint a picture and maybe, with thousands of more pages ahead, he’ll really find his footing — but I’m in no rush to plow ahead. I’m gonna take a breather from fantasy for a book or two, but when I do jump back to this genre, it is not going to be with The Great Hunt.

DID NOT FINISH: 56%

another unfortunate FOTR comparison is what made me DNF - this book is a few moments of action broken up by incredibly boring traveling scenes and a whole lot of nothing else. disappointing because i really wanted to sink my teeth into this series but at 56% i knew i could not force myself through another ~200 pages of it
adventurous
