If I could give this book ten stars, I would. I could not put it down, cried through its ending, and wish only that I had never read it, so I wouldn't have to feel the empty hole it has left now that I have finished it.

relaxing medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

I read this book for one reason only:

In the seven years since its publication, despite seeing it all over booktube, booktok and in my local stores, I had never once heard a spoiler nor even known its general premise. To go that long without hearing the twist ending and actively avoiding spoilers meant that I HAD to finally read this book. It was fine, perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if I’d read it for the first time when I was younger? It also reminded me a lot of a book you’d read in a year 7/8 English class.

2.5 stars is probably a more accurate rating. Again, the book was fine, but the writing style annoying the living daylights out of me.

I am happy I finished this book. I was about to give up on it about a quarter of the way through because I was having such a hard time relating to the characters, BUT after part 3, I couldn't put the darn thing down. Halfway through, I would have only given it 2 stars, but Parts 4 and 5 redeemed an otherwise boring plot and put this book at the top of my "Best of 2014 List." If you are feeling like I was, and want to give up on it, I'd say stick it out because the end is beautiful and finally exhibits the emotion necessary to accompany the writing style and prose of the novel.

Insanely, beautifully, twisted story about love, loss, grief, and everything in between. A definite must read.
