By no means perfect, but certainly fun and inventive enough to warrant a read. The story of a paranormal event during the war, the 1940s filmmaker who suffered a tragedy trying to make a movie about it, and how the events have caught up to the future. In the end, it kind of goes full SCOOBY-DOO! with explanations and top-secret cults, but it’s still worth the ride, even if the ending is predictable.

The story interweaves an old film with present time, using "phrasing" like they do in Archer, although not for comic effect. It's an old-school horror tale that is 100% predictable (unless you're an 11-year-old who isn't familiar with plots, in which case you're probably not reading this), but that doesn't make it any less entertaining. The art, as was promised when I heard about this book, is excellent, as good as those comics my brother used to get in the 70s. As a girl, I was given Archies. According  to the back cover of this book, these guys have turned the Archie gang into a horror comic series, so I will be seeking that out at some point, too.

It was an interesting story, with a cool monster and explanation of sort of how and why it exists within today’s world, but I did see the twist coming pretty early on.

The art was great and definitely lended to the story being told. The story itself could’ve been fleshed out a little more and I didn’t feel very attached to the characters. Personally, I think it could’ve benefitted from the film timeline being an actual timeline of events, from the father finding the tape to starting to digitize it and showing it to his son, and as they slowly watch more of it and become obsessive in their own ways, we get to see that father-son dynamic push and pull. Then see why exactly the son dropped interest so hard and so fast near the end of finishing the movie, and how that just made the father more obsessive, trying to rekindle that spark, and it leads him to the nursing home where our story begins. I think that’s what this story was really missing for me. It said the son had been obsessed, but it only ever showed the father being obsessed without motive. It would’ve been nice to see that obsession be driven by something like a need to understand his son.

Then again, in the book, the father is speaking to the director about how the movie was about so much more than the monster. He starts to say it was about father-son dynamics, and the director interrupts him to say he fundamentally misunderstood, and it was only ever about the Ghoul. So maybe it’s just about the Ghoul.
