this is such an important book because of the way it handles real life issues through the lenses of a young person growing up and dealing with them, without being unrelatable. i didn’t always agree with mara’s decisions but i could understand them, and overall this made me think. it was a revelatory book and definitely one of my favorite reads this year. i loved the writing style and how the title connected to a central metaphor with the characters.
