This was a Book Club read, because we wanted something that was non-fiction but that was easy to read and not full of jargon šŸ„²

A dark and thrilling tale, this book needs many content warnings. We see so many serial killer profiles these days and this is one that needs to be looked into (although hopefully not glamourised) šŸ˜«

The ending frustrated me to no end though!
I cannot believe Israel committed suicide šŸ˜« I was so frustrated that he got to get away with all of these crimes. At the end, when it asks if racial profiling allowed him to get away with so much, I nodded vigorously.

I normally am not a person who is invested in reading about serial killers but this investigation into Israel Keys, a man I had no idea existed, intrigued me. The BOTM version is sold out so that alone was enough for me to read. Definitely an easier read in terms of reading ability. The content itself still made me feel a bit uncomfortable but learning the process and the why was what kept me reading.

I have read a ton of true crime, listened to many podcasts, watched all the docs, and many youtubes and Israel Keyes has to be one of the most terrifying serial killers in history. He did it all: arson, burglary, murder, rape... He was truly a monster. I have been completely paranoid while reading this because he was smart enough not to get caught while committing crimes over the course of 14 years. He committed his crimes all over the country in all manner of locations and even in broad daylight. Unfortunately, he committed suicide so we will never know the true extent of his reign of terror and he will never be brought to justice.

Highly recommend for readers who enjoy true crime with a focus on serial killers.

Wow. I have read a lot of true crime but didn't know about this guy, though as I was reading this, I vaguely remember this case, as I lived in Washington state at the time. The writing here was fantastic and getting to understand the timeline of things.

KEYES: There is no one who knows me, or who has ever known me, who knows anything about me, really. . . . Iā€™m two different people, basically.

RUSSO: How long have you been two different people?

KEYES: A long time. Fourteen years.

I re-read this for my Criminology course. I enjoyed it a lot more the first time I read it (I use the term "enjoyed" loosely because in reality there's nothing to enjoy about this type of subject matter). During my second read I noticed that while it was detailed in terms of the crimes committed, court proceedings and childhood background it didn't explore Keyes' psychology enough. I really wanted an in depth evaluation of Israel Keyes' personality ( even if it was educated speculations based off given evidence) but was rather dissapointed in this regard. However, I do understand that a large portion of this case has not been released to the public so I can't really fault the author too much.

Nonetheless, I'm going to keep my initial rating because in some aspects it was useful for my research needs.
