This was a Book Club read, because we wanted something that was non-fiction but that was easy to read and not full of jargon 🥲

A dark and thrilling tale, this book needs many content warnings. We see so many serial killer profiles these days and this is one that needs to be looked into (although hopefully not glamourised) 😫

The ending frustrated me to no end though!
I cannot believe Israel committed suicide 😫 I was so frustrated that he got to get away with all of these crimes. At the end, when it asks if racial profiling allowed him to get away with so much, I nodded vigorously.

Well-written true crime, doesn't glorify the killer and does give attention to the victims as human beings.

Starts out strong with the search for the killer, and has a compassionate approach to the victim. Unfortunately, once the killer was found, it becomes slow, with not much concrete information revealed. In the end,
it's hard to tell, based just on the given information, whether Keyes was actually a serial murderer. Considering we don't even have strong evidence in the book of any other murder aside from Samantha Koenig beyond Keyes's confessions, and Keyes was constantly lying, it's hard to take his word for fact.
There's also a considerable amount of reverence for some shady law enforcement interrogation techniques and practices given by the author, which is wild considering how incompetent law enforcement is throughout the book.

while i fully believe this book to be extremely well written & painstakingly researched, it also solidfied my own personal rule to never read true crime again. this book was as horrifying as it was informative. true crime girlies, i highly recommend! but any average joe reader with a weak stomach... maybe pass.
