My enjoyment of this story was probably hampered a bit by having seen the movie version before reading it. In fact, the movie was one of my favorites when I was growing up, so the book never really had a chance to impress me in a big way. I had the movie and the way the story is told there so deeply ingrained in my mind, so when the book differed I always found myself wishing it were more like the movie.
Still, I did like it overall. It was cute and entertaining, and even a little heart breaking at times. It has its flaws, but none so huge that it hampered my enjoyment of the story. 3.5 stars.

I have read this book many times and adore it! One of the best ever!

Now in my top ten favorite books. I'm sorry it took me so long to read.
I loved this book (and the movie version starring Shirley Temple) when I was young so it was nice and kind of comforting to go back and read it again. I don't think I enjoyed it as much this time as I did 40 or
so years ago, because of course I noticed things now that I didn't then, such as the convenient coincidences (how likely is it that her father's friend, who has been looking for Sara for two years, suddenly moves right next door to her?) and the predictable plot. Despite the problems with the storyline, I still found the book to be lovely and feel all young girls should read it.

Oh such a sweet story!!!
I loved the old language and writing and the story is so sweet and i just loved Sara. Definitely a must read for a childhood classic.

Did a quick reread of this book via a spectacular radio drama I found (which then made me want to rewatch the fantastic movie adaptation) and was just as spellbound by it as I was when I was a child.
