This duology could be one of my favorites I have read in a while. I will admit: this first book can be a bit slow. It spends a lot of time building the surrounding world and characterization, which is great for the faster-pased second book, Namesake, but can leave you a bit underwhelmed by the story. Overall, I do think this book is a definite worth-while read (I read it on the beach to add to the *experience*) and I feel anyone who gave this book 3 stars or higher should definitely read the sequel.

If you're looking for a summer read than I recommend this book. Adventure on land and sea with a cliffhanger to boot. For about 350 pages you will understand and live the life of a pirate as well as certain rules that should never be broken. Also this has found family and friendship built on trust, but there are secrets. The world in this book was beautiful and dangerous, the plot ever expansive with a lot of adventure with some down time, and a diverse cast of characters. I didn't want this story to end, but I always have the sequel to read. I don't know if it's just me, but every time I was reading this book I had the Pirates of the Caribbean theme music going on in my head.
