I truly enjoyed Regan and Daniel’s story! The development of their relationship was sweet. I liked the banter and vulnerability between the couple.

This was such an amazing book. I think I've reread it like 3 times now and only now getting around to reviewing it. Like I literally just have praise for this book. It was heartfelt and sexy and tragic and dark and literally everything I love in romance novels. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.

This novel had its pros and cons. We see a VERY needy girl which truthfully just annoys me. But overall the plot was well thought out. The reader sees the story from povs of both the male and the female, which increasingly displays the neediness of the girl.

I seem to have a hate-on for everything lately. In this case, I can sympathize with the feelings you have, Reagan, maybe. But I can't sympathize with your actions. You're a bit of a twit. Though really the author just failed to sell me on your reactions after what you've been through. Not your fault, really. I'm sure it's normal to have a co-masturbation scene less than 48 hours after escaping a brothel where you were raped repeatedly.

The last we’ve heard about Reagan, we were told she was sold as a sex slave somewhere in Russia. Before the events of Last Hit concluded, it was alluded that Daniel had found her. I was relieved, because Reagan was a victim of being in the wrong place and at the wrong time. Admittedly, I expected (and hoped) that the author would just give us a perfunctory summary of what had happened to her while she was gone.

I was wrong. So wrong.

In great, explicit detail, Clare told us exactly the kind of debasement she’d suffered through the hands of her captors and “owners”. To be honest, all the depravity had turned me off any future sexual relation that would be in store for Reagan and Daniel. I just don’t think those kind of stories were great preamble to their relationship. I feel that in as much as Reagan needed time to heal, the readers, too needed time to cope with the what had happened to Reagan. Personally, I spent a lot of time grimacing through any sexual intercourse between them. That’s not to say I didn’t think they were hot. Daniel has a dirty mouth on him. And in normal circumstances, I’d find that lovely. Not this time, though.

In my opinion, they jumped in way too fast. Almost too easy, that the things that had happened to Reagan didn’t hold any relevance. I’m not sure if the author was trying to make a case for the kind of trust Reagan has on Daniel, but I wasn’t convinced someone with her immediate past would be so casual about sex with another man after going through what she did. In Daniel’s defence, he asked for her total acquiescence before doing the deed. However, it still made me feel uncomfortable, to say the least.

Despite that, I admire Jessica Clare’s chutzpah. She doesn’t pull any punches. She’s brutally honest. I may be a bit traumatized, but I think there’s no other way to tell these type of stories. It was every bit as close to reality as I’d hoped to never know.

Eh, the first book was better. At one point it just starts to get repetitive.

I never thought I could like Regan and Daniel's story more than Daisy and Nikolai's, because I loved their story pretty damn much, but sweet Jesus, I did. If this keeps up by the end of Vasily and Naomi's story I'll need a 6th star or something. And now I'm in that depressed I'll-never-find-a-book-as-good-as-this-ever-again kind of state, which is ridiculous, obviously, but dammit it feels pretty real and it's not cool.

One of my favorite excerpts: "This is a fucked up world, darlin’. That you’re still breathing oughta be counted as a win."

This is by far the best book of the series! Last Breathe nails what we love about the Clare-Frederick partnership- complex characters, fast paced and suspenseful action, intense chemistry, steam steam steam steam, and a romantic sweetness weaving it all together.

If you read the first book, this story catched us up with Regan, Daisy’s roommate that got caught up in the Nikolai-Daisy business in book one. She was abducted and has been forced to work as a sex slave. She’s been dehumanized and violated, but she’s fighting for survival. Enter Daniel, ex-army man turned assassin (and Nikolai’s colleague)- he doesn’t expect to find Regan in his mission investigating a Rio brothel is his missing sister. Regan doesn’t trust his intentions, but she’s about to be sold to a very bad man and is desperate, so she chooses to escape. And thus, we have a reluctant rescuer and a reluctant rescuee evading some dark and powerful enemies. This is story of a rescue on many fronts- a man rescuing a woman from torture and slavery but also two damanged and hurting individuals rescueing themselves and each others from being consumed by their own damage.

I loved Regan- she’s been through hell, but she’s resilient and determined. She’s hurting and scarred, but not broken- she’s still willing to be vulnerable and to care. And, Daniel is a dreamy leading man- skilled and capable, intelligent and witty, protective and tender. His care of Regan is really touching- he somehow manages to still treat her like a desirable woman, but he actively thinks about her emotional (and physical) safety and gives her space to let her trauma breathe. He’s protective but not domineering- he let’s Regan be at his side not just for the action but emotionally here.

With most romances centered on a sexual assault, you do have to suspend a bit of disbelief in terms of how it is handled- but Daniel and Regan’s love doesn’t burn too quickly- Regan’s trauma is respected and acknowledged and actively considered int he romance- not just something she magically is “cured” of once she gets with the guy. The dual POV is really great here, and the emotional and tender way these two connect, first out of necessity and then out of admiration and respect, is sexy AF. Oh, and the bedroom stuff is HOT HOT HOT.

Overall, I loved this story- action, adventure, steam, and chemistry but most important two equally footed and complex leads delicately being woven together amongst all the action. Highly recommend..
