I just finished this and I can see the goosebumps on my arms. What an incredible book, and a must read for all Australians. Set across the day in the life of an undocumented Sri Lankan immigrant living in Sydney, this book showed me a side of a city I've lived in my whole life and never known. How this book didn't win after being short-listed for the Miles Franklin award astounds me.

The stream of conscious of the main character was pretty grating. I had to keep taking breaks with this book because I found all of the characters very annoying.

i don’t usually read thriller books, but it was well paced and a good read;
24 hrs of narrator danny’s anxiety, hopelessness & cynicism made it heavy to read so i had to take a lot of breaks
commentary on immigrant rights and the hypocrisy in the people and systems theoretically promising support

Thanks to Scribner for the free book.

A deeply pensive story of an illegal immigrant in Australia who has important information about a murder but fears deportation if he contacts the authorities.

I had a hard time getting into the groove of this one, truthfully. The writing style is very unique and it took me a moment to get used to it, but once I did I found the story to be quite compelling and suspenseful. The portrayal of the main character as an illegal immigrant trying to make a life for himself, all the while being constantly tormented by the fear of deportation, is deeply compelling. Danny’s introspection and fear-induced immobility were gloriously frustrating, but they ultimately made for great suspense. I found the topic very impactful and insightful, and it has absolutely made me want to dig into similar stories. I would recommend to readers who tend toward more unique, complicated writing and novels.
