Such a cute story about a girl wanting a pet and all the alternatives she tries when her parents say no.
Prudence wants a pet, but her parents tell her no. So Prudence makes her own pets. The first (and most awesome) is a branch. The name? Branch. (reminds me of my cat whom I named Mouse)
Throughout the book, Prudence goes through a series of pets.
This book would be a wonderful addition for storytime. The reader could bring in an assortment of odd items and have the children pick one to be their pet.

Would make a fun read aloud. Fun solution to common problem of wanting a pet:-) Love the energy of the character.
This book is great. Very funny-if you're an adult. I'll do this for story time with older kids.
This one really worked for me. Both text and illustrations. I nearly laughed pretty hard when Prudence tried to use her baby brother as a "pet" when other things failed.
Prudence desperately wants a pet, but her parents are not so thrilled with the idea. So Prudence takes it upon herself to find her own pet...a branch, a twig, a shoe, her baby brother...
I loved the imagination and humor in this story, right down to the final word, which brings the story round full-circle. The illustrations did not do much to enhance the story for me, but fortunately the text carries the story well enough on its own.
