E. Lockhart

3.19 AVERAGE

I probably had too high of expectations of Lockhart after reading We Were Liars. This book tries to disrupt linear narrative by telling the story of the main character almost completely backwards. The most interesting part of the book was how the main narrator thought about, grappled with, and tried to disrupt stereotypically masculine superheros. Other than that, I felt the book seemed rushed and needed to be fleshed out more. Overall, a good quick read if you're looking for a bit of mystery and don't mind a little gore.

Once again, this book brings up the point: can you really like a book if you don't like the main character? I was intrigued by Jule at the beginning, but by the end of the book, I didn't really care what happened to her. I have to admit that the book felt a little spooky, reading about Puerto Rico with their people suffering from the effects of a hurricane, and talk of a high rise in Vegas, which I read the day after the mass shooting. Throw in the attacks on the Westminster Bridge in London earlier this year, and it includes several sites where people have experienced grief.

The reverse order wasn't that difficult to comprehend after a bit, although I realized that Noa would have to be mentioned again, back in present time. While I didn't really "like" the main character in We Were Liars, either, this one was enough more distasteful to be less compelling to me.

only thing this book has going for it is the sexy cover and interesting concept.
