I can't think of anything redeemable to say about the stories in this part of Tom King's run on Batman. Every page is awful. Each story contains ridiculous stakes that King doesn't pull off. And I read the final issue from this arc when it came out. I didn't enjoy it, but when I got to the final page, I threw my copy across the room. It's some D- fanfiction crap, and Tom King is too good a writer to have let it go to print.

It gets one star purely on the hard work all the artists did to make this garbage at least look nice.

I recommend it for people who spend hours surfing through websites looking for the worst fanfic they can find.

The wedding issue itself is a long, drawn out disappointment, but the lead-in’s are so gonzo bonkers that they almost make up for it.

Ok so we’re finally here: the wedding. This book was broken into 3 parts: a Booster Gold arc where there’s time traveling nonsense (didn’t care for it), an excellent arc with Joker, and finally, the wedding.

Or I should say, “wedding.”

The Joker storyline was the most enjoyable of the whole run King has done so far. The carnival/double date issue was awesome, but this is the very best. I really liked the way he wrote Joker here. This needy, schizophrenic quipster on a killing spree is exactly what I love seeing in Joker. Waiting for his invitation, making his (bloody, sadistic) case for being best man... it really stood out from the other issues.

The wedding itself... I’m really disappointed that the ending is basically “they can’t get married because then Bruce will be happy and that’s bad for the world.”

When I first heard that Bats was marrying Catwoman, that was my first thought. How would it even work? He wouldn’t be Batman anymore if he was happy. His whole character would change, and in my meta brain (thinking about the publisher and how they want to keep selling Batman comics forever, etc), it seemed impossible that this would actually happen. I was hoping the story would find a way to get beyond that, but sadly, it did not.

The little reveal with Bane at the end seems tacked on. I suppose if Selina had gone to see him instead of Holly, that would have been a real gut punch. As we leave things, though, Batman and Catwoman come to the same conclusion separately and jump off rooftops (drama queens). I’m guessing that pain and that decision will just manifest as “new writer takes over and everything is back to normal with Batman in pain and punching people and Catwoman being a not-good-not-evil burglar.”

So all for nothing, which is I guess the idea for comics. The last issue brought in a bunch of different artists to do full-page artwork, so that was wonderful, and the art throughout is incredible, once again.
