A true page-turner! This is so tense and almost impossible to put down once the plot gets going (and it gets going very quickly). The villain in this is truly despicable and reading some of the things he says and does is so uncomfortable at times.

I'm conflicted about this book. I really enjoyed it - the plot was exciting, I was left guessing for a lot of it - but...

BUT

The use of the r-slur, n-slur and a chinese-slur (the latter used many times, as the name of a fictional location) colored this book gray for me. While they were all used by a character who - if this was a real person, probably would talk like this - there wasn't a whole lot of explanation or detracting from the other characters in the book. Granted, only the latter mentioned one was said allowed to anyone else but it still felt very shoe-horned in. Like the author took advantage of creating a character who would say these things just so he could say them. And that feels smarmy.

If it wasn't for those, I honestly think I'd give them a high 4 maybe 5 star rating. If those slurs were used and there was some explanation or backlash from other characters - something that let's me know the author truly understands that the use of those words is NOT OKAY - then maybe, just maybe, I could let it slide. But that isn't how this feels.

(I use other reading apps, so you may see this again!)

A fast read.
Ashley was almost cartoonish in how terrible he was. He casually murdered a kitten, kidnapped a little girl for sex work, mutilates others, slowly kills people....
 It's almost too much.

I don't know if the author has ever interacted with a 9 year old, but Jay is not a convincing child.
For that matter, Darby isn't really a convincing young-20s woman. She's kind of flat. There's a subplot about getting home to see her mom in an emergency with some self guilt thrown in.

I did enjoy the overall action of the book. The violence was over the top, but I can appreciate the fact that people actually get hurt. Although Darby's plot armor is thiiiick. So is Ashley's for a lot of it, I guess.

First off, this book is very slow. Then,
I flipped to a random page on accident and read a paragraph and it was just blatant racism. After reading some reviews, I found out that it in no way adds to the story No one is telling the character it’s wrong and there was zero development around it. Just racism for the sake of racism.
I am no longer interested in finishing this novel.

I really enjoyed all of the characters and each of their motivations. Even though I hate Ashley, his character was still very intriguing and really well written. I loved the multiple perspectives and it really added to the atmosphere of the book. I recommend this to anyone who wants a really good, single title, quick read.

i thought this was going to be a mystery but apparently not we learn who the kidnapper is in the first chapters, i have mixed feelings about this book some parts were cheesy and sometimes the villain came of as the over the top, mustache twirling kind and it took me out of the story but other times i would find myself rooting for the fmc and guessing what will happen, overall it was a good time but just keep in mind that this book relies on the shook value if you want things to make sense all the time this is not it there are some stupid decisions
