No Exit is no ordinary suspense thriller. It is scary and terrifying, verging on horror! The novel starts with Darby, a young college student, rushing home to see her sick mother and being forced to stop at a mountainous Colorado rest area because of the blizzard she couldn’t out run. There is a 7 year old little girl locked in a dog cage in the back of a van, who Darby accidentally discovers, and there are 4 strangers, one of whom is obviously a kidnapper. Things go from bad to worse to much worse, as Darby is determined to save the child no matter what it takes. It has been years since I have read such an anxiety inducing nightmare of a scenario that could be all too real, this one is definitely not for the feint of heart.

i was very excited to read this after giving the last word—the best thriller i've ever read—a 5 star rating last year. it was packed with tension while simultaneously refusing to take itself seriously (katana-wielding, fedora-wearing, butter-vape consuming incel, h.g. kane, you will always be famous...). its allure hinged on how adams was able to (imo) expertly intertwine suspense with humor. however, i found no exit lacking in both of these departments. sadly, it was a literal fever dream.

do the characters make stupid decisions? yes.
are there a myriad of tangential, irrelevant plot lines? yes.
does the tone alternate every other passage? yes.
are there weird unnecessary racist comments thrown in? yes.
do you have to suspend your disbelief as if someone were holding a gun to your head? yes.

but is it fun? sort of?

there are...so...many plot twists that it ruined my reading experience. i became aggravated at the egregious abuses of plot twists in this book. adams should have stopped at three, maybe four, twists, but he was clearly trying to shockmaxx the readers, albeit at his own expense. also the ending????? what the fawk bruh 😭 like...do NOT piss me off. please be so fr, taylor adams.

despite all of these grievances, i thought it was fairly entertaining. the book is very fast-paced (i read this in a day), the main character is a strong protagonist (for the most part), and the narrative is engaging (you truly want to stick it out to the end).

overall, a bit disappointed, but i don't regret reading this book.

This was so good! I was hooked! The suspense was high, and the plot twists were great! Such a solid, fast-paced read.

This is a super fast paced thriller about being stuck at a rest stop in a blizzard with kidnappers! Darby is quite ingenious and tenacious to try against all odds to save Jay.
The bathroom window carried so hard. and a reminder to update your texts as you get more information 😩 the wrong rest stop my girl!

(Not a thriller reader so not sure what to rate!! It was scary tho!)

Normally, I don’t love these kinds of books: characters all trapped in one location BUT this was the best book I’ve read in a long time!

Is the ending predictable? Yes. Is the way the plot unfolds predictable? No! This was a page-turner! I was laughing, gasping, truly ran the whole gamut of emotions. I loved how much heart was thrown into this crazy and gory story. Highly recommend as a thriller!
