Despite the myriad of complaints I am about to write, I did like this book. But what am I if not a complainer?
First, why, in all of Morgan Matson's books, do the high school main characters date 18/19 year olds in college. Is that not a little weird?? Like I know it's a 2-ish year age gap but high school and college are wildly different places.
Second, what psychopath of a mom cuts her teenage daughter off financially when SHE'S the one making her drive cross country? And what right does she have to be pissed that she took a detour? Give the girl a break her father just died 3 fucking months ago dude. Pay attention to your son that you threw into rehab maybe?? Instead of making him someone else's problem? That made me mad honestly. Like here's your daughter that doesn't normally break rules and you get mad at her for detouring on a trip you made her take. Sure.
Third, about the localities: who on god's green earth has ever thought Kentucky smelled good. I live 20 minutes from Kentucky - it does NOT smell like how she describes it. Also, ain't NO FUCKIN WAY Amy has never heard of sweet tea before are you actually jokingggg. This book was written in 2010 not the 1800s. Be so serious PLEASE. Last bit on this: since when is saying "yep" a "cowpoke" thing? I live in the north-eastern reaches of the midwest and we say that here. They say that literally everywhere. And since when is Dairy Queen seedy????
My last gripe is Hadley. I know she's meant to be terrible, but would it have been that hard to make her a normal person? She is so not worth the effort Roger put into her. Why do people always go for girls like this. She was a red flag from the beginning bestie !!! Not trying to victim blame Roger but come on. Also I get this is the point of her character and Roger's part of the trip but whatever.
ANYWAY. Cute read. Very summery. Made me cry near the end. Yay.

I did enjoy this slightly less then the last time I read it. It was still enjoyable, but I thought some parts were too long. I also didn’t cry which is shocking because I’m always crying. I did like the characters for the most part, but I do wish we got more interaction between Amy and her family. I did love the road-trip element and now I want to go on one.
