My feelings about Barry's latest echo those of Goodreads reviewer Charlotte:

DNF 15%- this book is all tell tell tell and the few show parts are just totally antithetical to what we’re being told. Will is an asshole, Nic is a doormat, I don’t care to find out what the hell either of their deals is.

The NYT recommended this and I have no idea why.

Chick Magnet was a light and funny romance that had me laughing the entire time. I have never read anything by Ms. Barry and I never thought a book about chickens would work out so well but I am happy I got to read this book. It was easy to read, had great characters, and was full of wit. I will certainly be watching for her next book to come out!

mf - contemporary romance - white MCs - low steam - POV: third, dual - celebrity - child-free - enemies to lovers - grumpy/sunshine - mental health rep - neighbors to lovers - opposites attract - small town - 5 stars. I really enjoyed this book, especially the humor in it. I read the first half in audio and then switched to ebook (against my will) and I do think the audiobook was really good. The first chapter had me laughing a lot with the runaway lawn dinosaurs. I liked how the characters (especially Nic) handled confrontation.

I loved this grumpy/sunshine, neighbors to lovers romance between a social media Chicken influencer and the hot 'Viking' vet next door! Steamy with so much character depth! I couldn't get enough of this small town romance.

Will was such a relatable lead, struggling to keep his business afloat and battling situational depression, he keeps trying to do better (going to therapy, fundraising, etc.). The characters are perfect for one another and the chemistry was off the charts.

Great on audio and highly recommended!! Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

I tend not to read The Latest Hot Contemporary Release, but in this case I made an exception, and I'm so glad I did - a really thoughtful, sweet contemporary romance that deals with depression, pets, abusive exes, and social media, with a compelling and realistic romance underlying the whole book.

This is an incredibly fun read! The hero is perfection. How can you not love a small town vet whose a little depressed but not afraid to get therapy? A meet cute involving a chicken chase? Adorable animals? I'm sold. I always like reading about interesting professions and this one had two professions that are super interesting to read about. I also have a thing for a romance where one of the characters is starting their life over and in this case Nicole is starting out in a new town. I loved seeing her find her way and meet new people. Can’t wait to read more from this author!

Solid 2.5 stars

This book had a lot of potential and decent MCs but unfortunately it didn’t deliver. There was a lot of repetitive inner feelings and dialogue when that time could have been better spent developing characters and having them interact.

The chemistry seemed kind of secondary to the plot and their hot interactions seemed stilted and uncomfortable.

I feel like this is one of those books that is not marketed as what it really is, although for me, it wasn't a problem as I found out about it by reading other people's reviews that explained the story more in dept.

The book follows Nic, a big Youtuber that moves to a small town wanting a fresh start after coming out from an abusive relationship, and Will, the only veterinarian in a small town, struggling to keep his practice. At first, they don't get along, but the attraction is there from the start, which means the story does not follow them realizing they like each other, as that happens very early on. It's more about how they become in a relationship with dozens of other things going on in their personal lives.

The book is very realistic, and there is no grand gesture or great drama, which is something I was looking for. However, it does touch on some heavy topics and shows people trying to adjust their lives after the pandemic, so it might not be for those looking for a fluff lighthearted read. Nic is also struggling after being in an abusive relationship for years, which may be something not everyone wants or can read.

Overall I enjoyed every aspect of the book and had a fun time reading it. I love romances where the conflicts that hinder characters from being together are not miscommunication, just life in general, and this is one of those. I also prefer dual POV romances, however, for me, this was the biggest drawback of giving a higher rating. The chapters alternate almost perfectly between Will and Nic, some of the scenes end in one character's POV and start immediately in the next one from the other character's POV, but their voices are muddled. Sometimes when there is only Will and Nic in a scene, it gets hard to remember whose POVs it is to the point where I would go back to check who I was reading. Sometimes it would describe what Will was going through in the middle of Nic's chapter, and it was almost a guessing game in "is this what he is really thinking or what Nic thinks is happening?". And this is not a problem from the third-person narrative since there are many books with multiple POVs in the third person that are distinctive. I just wish the narrative was a bit clearer.

I would recommend this book to everyone looking for a more down-to-earth romance, and that enjoys reading not only about the main couple but also about their friends and family.

Thank you Netgalley and Montlake for the ARC in exchange of an honest review.
