I missed when this was massively trending back during covid but as much as it wasn’t an all time favourite I can admit the hype was for a reason.

This tale follows the tale of Circe and essentially the stories of her life and the people she meets.  Which is shockingly a lot considering early in the book she gets herself exiled for life to an island.

Weirdly poetic at times it had some beautiful quotes.

Fantasy is not my favorite genre, but I enjoyed revisiting my college Greek Mythology classes via this story.

This is character driven, so if you like plot driven this may not be for you. This is about the beginning of Circe before Odysseus came to her island. Her being an outcast amongst her family, the love she thought her father had for her, and the love she thought she had with a mortal who loved another. We also get the origins of Scylla, the Minotaur, and how Circe became a powerful witch. We get a cameo from Jason and Medea who helped Jason get the golden fleece. We also meet Daedalus and a young Icarus as well as Ariadne which adds more legend to these Greek myths. Hermes is a companion for a bit until he angers her.

Odysseus finally comes, but not before other ships arrived and Circe has worked her magic into turning them into pigs after an event made her suspicious. He stays with her for a while telling her of his journey and the Trojan war, how he devised the Trojan horse to win.

Eventually, he left and we follow her life afterwards, which I don't want to spoil. I found this enlightening and enjoyable, expanding my knowledge of Circe's myth. I hope Madeline will write more for I love Greek mythology.
