I selected this book for its tag of "horror" to continue a Halloween themed month. This did not feel like horror.

Lovecraft has lovely prose and builds suspense adeptly. He overuses the phrases "I will not tell you," "I do not have to tell you," "I will tell you," "It is unnecessary that I tell you..." These appear over and over again. And I'm like... no, really, I want to know, that's why I'm reading!!

There's descriptions of Antarctica, fictional aeons-old architecture, and fictional history. Descriptions until I was impatient past all holding back and finally skimmed and found... the horror that I was waiting for never actually happened.

Do not recommend. There are surely better Lovecraft creations to start with than this.

Keep in mind how long ago this was written, and that it's in many ways one of the first of it's kind, and even now lovecraft manages to set a spooky atmosphere that gets the imagination flowing.

A great story, lovercraft is brilliant at building up scene and feeling as well as his descriptions of the geography surrounding the characters. Cthulhu we wait.

Tedious and painfully boring
