That was so much better than I expected. I love Hagio Moto’s harder sci-fi but have not generally enjoyed her boys love stories (nothing against shonen-ai, just didn’t love The Heart of Thomas) but this was so good. I love the way she starts her chapters at the end and then goes back to beginning and the way this story moved through time.

First off, a massive physical object. Second, a lovingly and respectfully crafted printing of a classic. Gorgeous and dramatic in true Moto Hagio style.

Pretty art, but not a lot of substance. The vignette-style, un-chronological chapters didn't work for me, and I didn't give a s*** about Edgar or Marybelle. The story was gothic and vampiric and frankly unappealing. So, despite it being a gift, I DNFed at page 275 of 512. 1 star.

While an interesting concept, this book honestly bored me to tears and only morbid curiosity kept me reading as long as I did

Episodic vampire stories that weave between different eras and perspectives. The last one was very gay/trans. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read volume 2.

This is a tough one for me to rate. I really like the artwork and the stories about this family are all fine...but I just didnt find it very compelling. I didnt finish it in one day and I really had to force myself to pick it up again. Not because it's bad...I just had lots of other things I wanted to read instead. But I got through it and I'm glad I finished it.

Hagio Moto is one of the pioneering shōjo artists for a reason! Its a huge story, and if you can keep track of the rotating cast of characters, it’s so much fun. Her vampirnellas are a fun take on the typical vampire, and all the characters have so much depth. Her art is beautiful, and her layering is restrained enough that the story is still possible to follow.
