An easy read. Didn’t guess the killer. I’m not super interested in continuing the series. As a reader the cat felt shoehorned in, but as a cat person, I understand not being able to shut up about your cat.
This was a two and a half star book for me, the mystery being the strongest part of the story. I went for the red herring hook line and sinker. My problem with the novel was the characters I really didn’t like any of them except for Diesel the cat. The main character was too prissy, his friends and co-workers were either gossips or pompous, the victim was so unlikeable everyone in the town hated him. For me the mystery or story or plot always is secondary to the characters so this book just didn’t cut it for me.

This was a great start to this series. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
Enjoyed the setting and found the peripheral characters more interesting than the murder suspects. Unfortunately, having a dead body turn up in a hotel room seemed to put a limit on the number of twists and turns that were possible, so the crime was pretty easy to figure out.
The cat in this book is no detective. The narrator has a complete lack of self-awareness and makes some interesting leaps of logic. The whole scenario is unbelievable and makes no sense. I ended up enjoying the absurdity of it all -- the way Charlie is convinced that everyone will find Diesel as irresistible as he does, his amorality and hubris in continually interfering with a police investigation out of curiosity, the underlying notions about misogyny, the way one character keeps accumulating fathers... it goes on and on. Definitely cannot recommend this one.
An enjoyable mystery featuring an academic librarian and his Maine Coon cat.
