Heart wrenching book of resilience and perseverance. Great coming of age story with some great morals thrown in along the way and it does have a happy ending.

This was great! I do think that I liked Dan's first book a bit more, but I still really enjoyed this book. The one negative thing that I can pin point is that this book seems to follow a similar story structure to his first book, The Honest Truth. Both stories are about boys who go on a journey facing big obstacles along the way. I didn't really mind that though, because while they follow similar story structures, this one had nice twists and turns along the way. This book goes into some really dark and violent places and that was completely unexpected, but I'm glad it went in the direction that it did. Overall I really enjoyed this and can't wait to see what's next for Dan Gemeinhart!

"When you ain't got nowhere to go, I s'pose it's easy to stay right where you are? No matter how awful."

"I guess maybe there's just something about a fire that makes a fella wanna talk."

"But I s'pose leaving graves behind is just something you do in this life, until you get to your own."

"But life is a funny thing. It just keeps on going on."

This story has so many quotes that I want to keep with me forever. I love this book and it is now added as one of my all time favorites.

And the audiobook was perfect. The right narrator + an amazing book = magic.

Joseph Johnson has lost everyone who is important to him. When his guardian sells his beloved horse Sarah, Joseph is determined to retrieve the last piece of home he has. On his way, he remembers the sweet counsel of his mother and the integrity of his father, hoping to do them right by helping others, even though his choices often divert him from his quest. A great story about empathy, responsibility, and courage.

Upper elementary.

Some Kind of Courage was part True Grit and part a kid-friendly version of The Revenant. It was action-packed and showed children being responsible and making good decisions. The main character was confident and kind, and seemed older than his age. Despite differences in culture and language, Joseph and his friend work together well and truly care about one another. Over all, this book is a good historical fiction book with great lessons. Unfortunately, I myself didn’t have fun reading it, but I know other people will love it.
