"a sequence of unease" fuck dude it sure is. meandering yet precise, written in short, clipped sentences, this novella manages to induce a feeling of dread like very few other works i've read

Gay 1984

In all honesty, the actual book itself was a three. However, the history of the book (published in 1977, rediscovered in a charity shop in 2022) and the author, the first first woman director in English publishing as well as an openly bisexual woman during the 1950s, bring the book another star.

The "They" of Kay Dick's novel gets at something that works better in written word than anywhere else: the horrible feeling of unappearance, of irrepresentability, of the presence that isn't there. Good luck finding that in a more visual medium. A dramatically unsettling work.
