really liked this book more than I thought it would!! I LOVE a complex female lead. evelyn was so easy to hate and yet i loved her the whole way through. loved the LGBTQ representation and the play between what society expects of women and evelyn’s relationship to that throughout the book. it first being used to her advantage, but then holding her back from being able to find peace with her one true love for so long. gorgeous story!

Me:

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has been popular and sitting on my bookshelf waiting for me to get to it for a long time.
“Never let anyone make you feel ordinary.”
I can’t believe I waited so long to crack it open. I guess sometimes I worry that they won’t live up to the hype but in this case it did just that for me.
In The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Monique, a junior journalist is requested by mega star Evelyn Hugo to write an article on her. When she finally meets Evelyn she learns that what the actress really wants if for Monique to write her biography that will reveal a life full of secrets including the reasons behind all seven of her marriages.
“People have so closely followed the most intricate details of the fake story of my life.”
In we dive into the crazy, ridiculous, twisted life of Evelyn Hugo, a poor motherless girl that first got married at 15. As we grow with Evelyn over time we experience the times of old Hollywood though her eyes and see the evolution of the decades and how they change her life.
“Don't ignore half of me so you can fit me into a box. Don't do that.”
This is a strange one really, because on the whole, judged by the sum of her action Evelyn is not a very nice person. She’s driven, ambitious, successful and she cares fiercely for those she loves, but she has little care or regards for the consequences of her actions on others.
“When you're given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn't give things, you take things.”
Over her life she gets exactly where she wanted to be and she’s not apologizing for it, she did what she had to do and she’d do it again. But fame, fortune and adoration isn’t all it’s cracked up to be when you don’t have those you truly love to share it with.
“Please never forget that the sun rises and sets with your smile. At least to me it does. You’re the only thing on this planet worth worshipping.”
There are ups and downs and you’ll go from loving to hating Evelyn. She makes as many mistakes as times she does the right thing and she hurts they people she loves just as much as she has been hurt by them. You’ll feel sorry for her at time, admire her at others and angry at her just as much and to me that is where the beauty of this book is. The strong and varied emotions evoked by this story are intoxicating.
“It’s always been fascinating to me how things can be simultaneously true and false, how people can be good and bad all in one, how someone can love you in a way that is beautifully selfless while serving themselves ruthlessly.”
I have never read a book like it and because of that, even when I didn’t like Evelyn I loved it.
“You can be sorry about something and not regret it.”

Finally read this book! It was entertaining for sure and I believe the storyline was pretty good. The reader is diving into this Hollywood life Evelyn Hugo and the lore of her 7 husbands. That ending of a twist it was unexpected. However, well written book. Not really a fan of Hollywood storylines.
