I had the best time reading this. The character development and world building were very well done and the pacing was perfect.
i really enjoyed this! i know a lot of people have said it was a slow and i do agree that the pacing in the middle could have been faster but overall i really enjoyed it. i think Silla is super relatable as an FMC and i like how she immediately doesn’t randomly become super good at fighting - it makes her seem more relatable and unique as the main character while also interesting to read about! the ending had me hooked, and im excited to see where this goes in book 2!

This is the highest I have ever rated a book. It takes A LOT to get a full 5 stars out of me, but dang it did The Road of Bones manage to do it.
What a wild ride this book was. It started slow but once it picked up, the story moved at a pace that had me holding my breath at almost every page. So many twists and turns and revelations I didn’t expect. I did NOT see those plot twists coming at the end — I had to spend a few minutes with my face buried in a cushion just to get over my shock.
While I loved the world building (we need more Viking romantasy!) and the magic system, my favourite part by far was the characters. I need to start with Silla because she is a true breath of fresh air in a genre dominated by main characters who are good with swords and enjoy fighting and killing. She’s soft — her favourite thing to do is cook and bake bread, she loves flowers, and she despises violence and just wants to talk things out. She’s kind and resilient and tries her best to see the good in people. She cares deeply about others and her growth throughout the story (from a scaredy cat with no confidence in herself, who feels like she needs to rely on others to save her, to a woman who stands up for herself, acknowledges her power and faces hardship with resilience and hope) has been one of the most satisfying character journeys I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. What a treat it has been to watch her come into herself!
The Bloodaxe Crew are a diverse set of people, each with their own personality and baggage. Not one of them is one-dimensional. They’re flawed but loyal to the bone, and I really enjoyed Silla’s friendship with Hekla and getting to learn about the world through Jonas and Rey’s POV in some chapters.
I want to write more because my chest is overflowing with feelings about this book, but I don’t think my review could ever do this story justice. This has been a true highlight of my reading journey so far.
