I completely and thoroughly enjoyed this book! The plot is plotting, itβs full of action + twists + secrets + betrayal. OH THE BETRAYAL π± Top it off with some hidden identity, a little bit of spicey time, and a slow burn π and BAM itβs a home run!

The characters are soooo lovable! Silla is alone and just trying to survive the wilds and the deadly (and very sexy) mercenaries whose wagon she decided to climb into π I love her little bonding moments with Hekla π«Άπ» But sheβs also deep in grief and trauma, dealing with addiction and other revelations that continue to come to light throughout the story. She puts on a happy sunshine-y front but deep down is just trying her best to keep it together.

Then we have the broody men π Silla fairly quickly falls in lust with Jonas but thereβs another little slow burn brewing with my man Rey ππ» and I CANNOT WAIT for it to unfold some more in book 2! I wouldnβt say book 1 feels like a love triangle, but she definitely clicks with both men on different levels!

Absolutely blasted through this and have really enjoyed the whole series so far.
this book went downhill fast. not sure why people are so hyped about this, because this just pulls on the same romantacy tropes from books like ACOTAR and the Grishaverse but in a new jacket (but worse). It very much felt like YA. The story was extremely predictable, which isn't always a bad thing but this story wasn't done in a new or interesting way. I don't dislike Silla, though she's a bit too much of a damsel in distress (and arguably simply stupid), I still didn't hate reading her POV. Am annoyed at how much she lied in unnecessary ways, especially after the Crew had shown themselves to be trustworthy. Also wish books would stop making women virgins and having painful first times, yet orgasming multiple times
I am also very tired of the first (blonde, what is up with the hate for blonde men in the romantacy genre) turning out to be evil in some way, and the broody dark haired guy saving the day in the end.
Don't understand why we got Jonas or the red assassin lady as POVs in the book. Not interesting, didn't add much to the story but did slow it down in a book where I felt not that much happened anyways.
Normally books get good in the last 20%, but this one somehow got less interesting. Especially the actual end felt very much like a kids TV show doing a little recap and "what did we learn", and emphasizing what they can expect next episode.
The magic system is still very confusing to me. The world building is also not great (like how are there so many thriving cities along the road of bones when there's so many robbers, murderers and freaky creatures) nor is the character development. I've read that the second book is better so I'll see if I give it a try.

This was just okay. I liked the premise and vibes, and by the end I could tell the author had things she wanted to say with some of the different aspects of the story. Silla was a nice change of pace from most romantasy main characters, and I thought the direction the romance went in was interesting.
Unfortunately, I think the pacing wasn't the best. Most of the book is spent traveling while Silla keeps looking over her shoulder for danger, and that did start to bore me eventually. That time could have been spent with the less developed members of the Bloodaxe Crew so they'd actually feel like part of the found family rather than people who are just hanging around.
It got a lot more interesting towards the end, so I'm not opposed to continuing the series, but I'm not in a rush to pick it up.

The story was not really original if you are a fantasy reader, but it is good written and got me hooked from the start, will read book 2 for sure!
