I really liked this book. The plot was interesting and I liked the main character a lot. Rey was a great character, you can tell he’s soft deep down. Jonas was good at the beginning but got worse over time.

I really enjoyed this Viking-inspired story, but absolutely check your triggers before reading. Most characters here are various shades of morally grey and the story and world are both dark. The world-building and character development are both very well done. There is an element of found family to the Bloodaxe crew that I did find very enjoyable and I really enjoyed Rey’s character from the beginning. I liked Silla as a character, but her naiveté did get to me and I often found myself wishing she had better judgement about who to confide in and when to do so. While Silla’s background is meant to be deliberately mysterious, I did find her secrets to be predictable, but it was no less fun for that. The villains of the story are very well done, especially Skraeda, a bounty-hunter character who manages to justify all manner of evil in the name of self-preservation and is extremely narcissistic.

The romance here was NOT my favorite, as the MMC comes off as a walking red flag - controlling, jealous, violent, irrational and constantly thinks he’s being “disrespected”- YIKES! This made the romance part of this story line hard for me to enjoy.

Overall the last 25% of this book was my favorite part and for all the predictable plot points I did see coming, there were several big twists I did not, that were excellently executed! I will look forward to continuing the series.
